Night Gallery

video

From: Wikipedia.org
Night Gallery is Rod Serling's follow-up series to The Twilight Zone that aired on NBC from 1970 to 1973. Serling functioned both as the on-air host of Night Gallery and as a major contributor of scripts, although he did not have the same control of content and tone as he did on Twilight Zone.

Serling appeared in an art gallery setting and introduced the macabre tales that made up each episode by unveiling paintings depicting the stories.

Night Gallery regularly presented adaptations of classic fantasy tales by authors such as H. P. Lovecraft as well as original works, many by Serling himself.

The series was introduced with a pilot TV movie that aired November 8, 1969, featuring the directorial debut of Steven Spielberg and one of the last acting performances by Joan Crawford. Unlike the series, where the paintings merely accompanied an introduction to the upcoming story, the paintings themselves actually appeared in the three segments, serving major or minor plot functions.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker

video

From: Wikipedia.org
Kolchak: The Night Stalker is an American television series that aired on ABC in 1974. It featured a newspaper reporter — Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin — who investigates crimes with mysterious and unlikely causes that the proper authorities won't accept or pursue. The series was preceded by two television movies, The Night Stalker (1972) and The Night Strangler (1973).

Through 1972 & 73, ABC had produced and aired two made-for-TV movies, which became the de facto pilots for the subsequent series. The original movie, based on an unpublished novel, entitled simply The Night Stalker would spawn a direct sequel in the form of an episode of the series: The Vampire. The second movie, The Night Strangler, however, was an entirely original story. The first episode of the series, The Ripper, is sometimes mistaken as the pilot of the series and shares a number of plot similarities with the 2nd movie.

The series was originally given a full season order, but was cancelled after only 20 episodes were produced.

Charley arrives at the beginning of the first episode to get Pop Larkin to fill in his tax forms. He is distracted from this when he falls in love with Mariette Larkin at first sight, and the Larkins distract him even further by attempting to teach him to play crib, and getting him drunk. In spite of his terrible hangover the next day, he becomes captivated by the idyllic country life led by the Larkins, and ends up as a member of the family.
